Improved lung function, lower infection rates with vaping products.

The choice for smokers is becoming clearer for vaping products. Again. Within a week, two MORE studies have emerged. One shows improved lung function, the other – lower infection rates among users. While claiming they want harm reduction, organizations and government officials will ignore not be able to find these studies.
The Roswell Park Cancer Institute study was done in 2011 (?) and showed
“For 12 of 17 measured biomarkers, they found significant declines in exposure to toxicants when participants changed from tobacco cigarettes to e-cigarettes. The decline in toxicant levels was similar to the decline seen among tobacco users who quit smoking.”
The other study, found on PubMed (included R. Polosa) stated
“High prevalence of cough/phlegm (43.1%) and shortness of breath (34.8%) was reported at baseline with substantial reduction in their frequency at subsequent follow-up visits. These symptoms virtually disappeared very quickly in both quitters and reducers.
Smokers invited to switch to electronic cigarettes who completely abstained from smoking showed steady progressive improvements in their FEF25-75% Normalization of peripheral airways function was associated with improvement in respiratory symptoms, adding to the notion that abstaining from smoking can reverse tobacco harm in the lung.”

US Vaping Industry Preparing to Fight the FDA

US Vaping Industry Preparing to Fight the FDA

Vaping advocates – retailers and manufacturers are piling onto a battle bus and plan to tour 15 politically sensitive states in a bid to thwart the new FDA vape regulations.
The group plans to lobby local politicians to try to save around 15,000 vaping stores that could be forced into bankruptcy once the FDA Deeming regulations come into full force.
The Right to Vape campaign sees a tax reform group joining forces with two vaping advocacy groups and spokesman for the group – Paul Blair – said:
The coalition will be urging lawmakers to amend the FDA rules in an end-of-year deal budget, including a broad omnibus spending bill.
Vaping advocates including some of the most popular vape YouTube reviewers have teamed up with some of the biggest vaping manufacturers to support the campaign and have so far raised over $190,000.

Study: E-cigarettes Are 95% Safer Than Tobacco

Recently I read news from Daily Caller News, it's about e cigarette:
An independent study finds that e-cigarettes are 95 percent safer than tobacco and could be “game-changer” for getting people to quit smoking.
The study, commissioned by Public Health England, says that while e-cigarettes may not be totally safe, they contain almost none of the chemicals in cigarettes associated with serious diseases like lung cancer and emphysema.
The report adds that there is a substantial body of high-quality evidence that e-cigarettes are an effective tool for getting smokers to kick their habit. The devices, which were only invented in 2007, already have 2.6 million adult users in England alone.
Contrary to a study released on Tuesday by the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, the report found no association between e-cigarette use among young people and a rise in teen smoking.
“Fears that e-cigarettes have made smoking seem normal again, or even led to people taking up tobacco smoking, are not so far being realized based on the evidence assessed by this important independent review,” Professor Linda Bauld, Cancer Research UK’s expert in cancer prevention told the BBC.
The report comes hot on the heels of a study from anti-tobacco campaign group Action on Smoking and Health that found no link between the rise in teens using e-cigarettes and young people transferring to regular cigarettes.
As lawmakers and regulators move to restrict vaping in public spaces, Public Health England rebutted claims that e-cigarette vapor poses a risk to bystanders, saying the vapor contains negligible amounts of nicotine. North Dakota, New Jersey and Utah all have restrictions on e-cigarettes. Florence County in Wisconsin has gone so far as to ban vaping in public places.
“If I was running a stop-smoking service, I would encourage people who are interested in trying e-cigarettes to have a go,” said Professor McNeill, one of the study’s authors. “I would also be recommending all the other evidence-based medications that people can use.”
One of the report’s recommendations was to treat e-cigarettes differently from regular cigarettes and not ban them in public spaces. But one of the key challenges the report identifies are widespread misperceptions about the safety of e-cigarettes. Almost half of British people are unaware that e-cigarettes are far less harmful than tobacco products.

New Study: Electronic Cigarettes Vapor Has NO Toxic Effect

In a recent study, scientists have found electronic cigarette vapor has NO toxic effect on the cells found in human lungs. Fresh research, funded by British American Tobacco (BAT), suggested inhaling nicotine vapor could be as safe as breathing air.
To perform these experiments, the tobacco giant teamed up with the MatTek Corporation, maker of human cell models used in “in vitro” laboratory experiments. Scientists then used a “smoking robot” to expose these lung cell replicas to tobacco smoke, two different brands of e-cig vapor, and plain old air.
After being exposed to old-fashioned smoke for six (6) hours, the cells died. However, after subjecting the cells to an “aggressive and continuous” dose of e-cig vapor, researchers claimed the damage to the airway tissue was “similar to that of air”. BAT spokesperson, Dr Marina Murphy, stated “by employing a combination of a smoking robot and a lab-based test using respiratory tissue, it was possible to demonstrate…. the e-cigarette aerosols used in this study have no [toxic] effect on human airway tissue.”
There are plans to tests a wider variety of e-cigs, to prove its results. “Currently there are no standards concerning the ‘in vitro’ testing of electronic cigarette aerosols,” said Marina Trani, ‎Group Head Scientific Product Stewardship at British American Tobacco. “Our protocol could prove very useful in helping the process by which these guidelines might progress.”
The debate about e-cigarette safety has been raging for several years. Study after study have highlighted health risks, although most experts agree vaping is much safer than smoking cigarettes. DrMichael Siegel, professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at Boston University’s School of Public Health, welcomed the latest study as evidence of the safety of electronic cigarettes; stating “Despite the limitations of the research, it adds additional evidence to support the contention that vaping is a lot safer than smoking.”
He called on public health bodies and anti-tobacco groups alike to encourage smokers to swap to vaping; a step which would “transform the nicotine market and achieve a huge public health victory.” going on to proclaim, “Such a phenomenon would result in the greatest public health miracle of our lifetimes.”
However, the health expert warned overheating liquid nicotine could produce dangerous toxins. Personally, overheating e-juice taste horrible and should be avoided for that reason alone. Vaping advocates claimed the previously research results, which found e-cigs vapor held dangerous chemicals, were false due to the nicotine liquid being exposed to high temperatures.
Earlier this year, British American Tobacco announced the release of a device called Voke, not currently available on the market, which is licensed as a medicine and produces no heat, working more like an asthma inhaler than an electronic cigarette.
Tom Pruen, Chief Scientific Officer of the Electronic Cigarette Industry Trade Association, stated he was satisfied the latest research was accurate. “While I’m sure that for many the source of the research will be a problem, of recent years the science conducted by the tobacco industry has been of very good quality, and despite the historic issues I wouldn’t view it with any greater skepticism than research conducted elsewhere,” he said. He went on to add, “the results are not unexpected. Not only are the components of an e-cig aerosol expected to be of low toxicity, based on a large number of analytical studies, but this research broadly agrees with a previous study.”

Electronic Cigarettes Are Not Tobacco

One of the biggest issues with the FDA’s proposed regulations of electronic cigarettes is the idea that e-cigs should be in the same category as tobacco. As we learned in the breakdown of PHE’s Evidence-Based Review, scientific evidence continues to suggest that e-cigs are much safer than smoking. While we do agree there should be some regulations for electronic cigarettes in terms of keeping them out of the hands of minors and making sure e-liquids are contained in childproof packaging, as well as ensuring e-cig devices are approved for safety and no unnecessary harmful ingredients find their way into e-liquids; we also feel that regulating e-cigs in the same way as tobacco is not the answer. As Rob Burton states, “Electronic cigarettes are not tobacco—they contain an ingredient derived from the tobacco plant, but the delivery of this ingredient via electronic cigarettes does not require the burning and inhalation of tobacco leaves, along with the thousands of other harmful chemicals found in a tobacco cigarette.”
When asked about the FDA’s proposal to regulate e-cigs in the same category of tobacco, Rob went on to say, “Electronic cigarettes should not be taxed in the same manner as tobacco cigarettes. If e-cigs are 95% less harmful than tobacco, as concluded and stated in the PHE report, then why tax them as tobacco when the end goal of tobacco harm reduction is to help smokers move away from tobacco?” This is definitely an important question for policy makers and health organizations to keep in mind, as well as the fact that cost also plays a significant role in terms of smokers making the switch to e-cigs. Therefore, if e-cigs are taxed in the same manner as tobacco, then an important advantage of making the switch is taken away from smokers in search of a successful alternative.

The New Future of Electronic Cigarettes

As electronic cigarette research continues to accumulate and point towards positive results, it has become quite obvious the original idea that e-cigs are a fad that will eventually fade away is long gone. With the first official recognition of their potential as a successful smoking cessation aid, it has become apparent that e-cigs are here to stay. As more and more smokers continue to successfully make the switch from tobacco to electronic cigarettes, we believe the future of electronic cigarettes will one day be summed up into one simple word—FREEDOM.

Vaping in the US is very popular

According to the CDC’s early release of its National Health Interview Survey, smoking rates in the U.S. have hit an all time low of 14.9 percent in 2015, which breaks the previous year’s record low of 16.8 percent. Smoking rates in both the U.S. and the U.K. have seen steady decline over the last 7 years, but no one seems to be able to agree on why that is. According to the CDC, their anti-smoking campaigns are to thank; however, on the other side of the Atlantic, Public Health England cites a different reason for decreasing tobacco use: the soaring popularity of e-cigarettes.

Smoking Rates Decline As E-Cig Use Increases

In August of 2015, Public Health England published a comprehensive evidence-based review on electronic cigarettes, which named e-cigs as a primary contributor to record low smoking rates. The same report concluded that, “e-cigarettes are around 95 percent safer than smoked tobacco, and they can help smokers to quit.”
In the U.S., smoking rates have also been plummeting since 2008, just one year after electronic cigarettes were first introduced in the United States. Despite the good news, tobacco is still the most frequent cause of preventable death and disease in the U.S. Everyone knows the dangers of smoking: About 500,000 Americans die from smoking related illnesses every year, and for each death, another 30 smokers are living with chronic illness or disability due to smoking. In addition to their shocking Tips Campaign, the CDC attributes the recent decline in smoking to higher tobacco taxes, public smoking bans and pharmaceutical nicotine replacement therapies, or NRTs; however, the decline in tobacco use has also coincided with a boom in the vaping industry. Annual e-cig sales in the U.S. totaled around $20 million in 2008, but by 2014, that figure reached $1.5 billion. Could there be a link between these inverse trends?

Almost 900,000 people used e-cigarettes in England to quit smoking

There are around 2.2 million people in the UK vape, among them, almost 900,000 smokers in England have used e-cigarettes in order to break their habit, a new study has suggested.
Researchers at University College London have estimated that 891,000 people have used one of the devices when trying to stop smoking in 2014.
This was opposed to using prescription medicine or receiving behavioral support.
Around 8.46 million adults smoke cigarettes in England. Around 37 per cent attempted to stop in 2014, with 28.2 per cent using an e-cigarette as an aid.
The study follows separate research showing that the chance of quitting rises by up to 50 per cent when an e-cigarette is used, compared with smokers who used traditional products such as nicotine gum or patches.
The long term rate of quitting smoking cigarettes rises from around 5 per cent to 7.5 per cent when e-cigarettes are used – amounting to around 22,000 people, according to the new study published in the journal ‘Addiction.’
Professor Robert West, who led the research team, said that the technology appears to help a “significant” number of smokers to stop, who would not have done otherwise.
However he said that the figure is not as high as “some e-cigarette enthusiasts claim.”
Professor West added that the research goes against the idea that e-cigarettes undermine quitting if smokers use them to cut down, and are a gateway into smoking.
“These claims stem from a misunderstanding of what the evidence can tell us at this stage, but this is clearly something we need to watch carefully.“
Professor Peter Hajek, director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit at Queen Mary University of London who was not involved in the study, said that the devices have the potential to reduce fatalities linked to smoking.
He added that it was “unfortunate” that specialist smoking cessation services are currently not offering e-cigarettes, and are seeing a drop in interest.
“This is unfortunate, as it is likely that even more smokers would switch to vaping successfully if e-cigarettes were combined with behavioral support that the services provide. Hopefully, findings like this will encourage the services to start offering e-cigarettes as a part of their overall toolkit.”
The data was compiled since the second quarter of 2011, by The Smoking Toolkit Study backed by organisations including the Department of Health and Cancer Research UK.
A separate study by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that 2.2 million people in the UK use e-cigarettes.
Put together using the ONS Opinion and Lifestyle survey, data indicated that half of people who used e-cigarettes did so to quit smoking. Just over a fifth said they felt that e-cigarettes were less harmful than tobacco versions.
However, despite vaping being cheaper on average, only 9 per cent cited this as their reason for using the devices.
The same number of people said they vaped because it meant they could stay indoors.
